In case you missed it
Australia’s 3G network has been active since 2006 but won’t be for much longer as space on cellular frequency bands must be cleared to support newer, faster technology.
This June, Telstra will phase out 3G mobile service to make room for 4G and 5G. Optus and Vodafone will follow suit.
Once 3G networks are turned off, 3G telematics devices will no longer work. Outdated fleets will lose vehicle and driving data, be unable to track vehicle locations or monitor speeding, and risk compliance violations.
As of late 2023, between 2 to 3 million 3G devices were still operating in Australia, but time is running out for your fleet to upgrade its technology.
Geotab can facilitate your upgrade
Businesses should not bury their heads in the sand. While there are upfront costs, upgrading to better telematics solutions with Geotab will improve your fleet’s performance by delivering greater processing power, on-device storage, and more.
Upgrading is also an opportunity to conduct an audit of your current needs and prepare for new heavy vehicle regulations and the growing focus on sustainability and electric vehicles (EVs).
Geotab is constantly releasing new features at the leading edge of connected vehicle technology, so you can access better data or solve problems you’ve been putting off. You will also enjoy end-to-end support, a marketplace of third-party apps and add-ons, and integrations for leading OEMs.
Geotab and our partners are here to help you, but first, we recommend taking a step back to analyse where you are and where you want to go. Here’s how:
1. Assess your exposure
Take an inventory of how many 3G devices you have in the field and compare this with a list of your existing assets: how much will you need to upgrade to have a fully connected fleet?
2. Identify needs and opportunities for upgrade
Along with our partners, Geotab will work with you to learn more about your business’s current pain points, establish your connected vehicle needs, and match you to the right technology stack.
3. Set a timeline
We will help you plan a staggered rollout to minimise fleet downtime. While you’re at it, it could be worth having your regular mechanical technicians become certified Geotab installers.
4. Get started
With a deadline set, we can impose a timeline and communicate it with your drivers and fleet coordinators to ensure everyone is on the same page.
