Veka PP: Making Crossings Safer

By Connected Light Solutions

Pedestrian crossings are a critical part of urban mobility, where traffic flow meets foot traffic. In Europe alone, 73% of road fatalities happen in cities, with over 4,700 pedestrians losing their lives in traffic accidents each year.

In Pamplona, Spain – a city that faces unpredictable weather but prioritises road safety – an innovative lighting solution has been implemented to address this risk: the Veka PP lighting system by Carandini. This lighting technology is specifically designed to enhance visibility at pedestrian crossings, reducing accidents in one of the most vulnerable parts of city infrastructure.

Improving Visibility in Difficult Conditions

Pamplona is no stranger to dense fog, especially during the colder months. This poor visibility puts both pedestrians and drivers at higher risk. Carandini’s Veka PP lighting system responds directly to these conditions, offering enhanced lighting that improves safety – even in the thickest fog. It’s designed to catch drivers’ attention while giving pedestrians better horizontal and vertical visibility.

One standout feature is its lateral flashing lights. These draw drivers’ focus to the crossing ahead, making it easier to spot in any weather.

Engineered for Safety and Efficiency

Veka PP isn’t just about visibility; it’s about creating a safer urban environment. The luminaire is equipped with a precision optical system that cuts down on glare and provides even light distribution, preventing shadows that can obscure pedestrians from view. Built to last, it’s also designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions Pamplona often faces.

Importantly, Veka PP is highly energy efficient. With 168 lumens per watt, it reduces energy consumption while also helping Pamplona meet its sustainability goals.

Controlux Sense: Smarter Lighting with Motion Sensors

The Veka PP system also offers the option of adding motion sensors, which can either work independently or be part of the larger Controlux Sense system. These sensors detect movement, allowing the lights to brighten when someone approaches the crossing. In areas with multiple luminaires, the system is smart enough to increase the brightness of all lights nearby, boosting visibility and safety for everyone.

This dynamic approach means the lights don’t need to stay at full brightness when the crossing isn’t in use. This feature is especially useful in rural or quieter parts of town, where energy savings become even more critical.

A New Standard for Road Safety

Pamplona’s new pedestrian crossing lighting system has significantly impacted road safety. It’s a step forward, providing peace of mind for both drivers and pedestrians. The success of this project showcases how technology can make roads safer and improve the overall quality of life in the city – setting a powerful example for other cities that face similar challenges.
